SAN BERNARDINO — Assemblyman Marc Steinorth, R-Rancho Cucamonga, hosted a regional job fair this morning at Cal State San Bernardino, with hundreds of applicants meeting with nearly three dozen employees in the hope of landing a job.

Business ranged from the private and public sector, with some vendors hailing from law enforcement and the military, and the non-profit sector.

The event was held in partnership with the Workforce Investment Board of San Bernardino County, which provided resume and application assistance.

Steinorth said he hopes to hold similar events in the future throughout the 40th Assembly district, which is comprised of Redlands, Highland, Loma Linda, and portions of San Bernardino and Rancho Cucamonga.

“It’s important for me as the assemblymember representing the 40th assembly district that we bring as much attention to the middle-class, hardworking families and the small businesses in our area so that we can really bring the resources necessary to help those families that are looking for employment,” Steinorth said.

“I’m going to try and grow this and also move it around the cities I represent,” Steinorth added. “I would like to bring job fairs to every one of those communities to make sure we’re always reinvesting in our communities.”

Stephanie Bell, 33, of Redlands, gave birth four months ago and was eager to re-enter the workforce. Bell had been working with at-risk youth for a non-profit.

“I think right now, it’s important,” Bell said of the job fair. “It’s a very good idea because there are a lot of people out there. It’s very hard for them to find a job. So to come here, where they have a lot of places hiring in one building, they have a greater chance.”

Bobby Gibbs, 27, of Redlands, said he was hoping to get a job with the state Employment Development Department.

“I think this is a good opportunity to look around and browse different jobs,” Gibbs said. “This gives a lot more personality to finding a job. With the online market, it’s just impersonal. So this gives a lot more benefit to meet with people and see what their business is all about.”

Andrea Cruz, business development manager with Quality Driver Solutions, in Ontario, was among the vendors speaking with job applicants.

“It’s a great event. Unfortunately we don’t see too many truck drivers at these events so it’s more just getting the word out and sometimes candidates (here) know drivers,” Cruz said. “… It’s a growing industry. I would definitely recommend anyone interested to get into truck driving, logistics and transportation, because this industry is something that’s going to be growing and increasing.”
