The children and spouses of the 14 people killed in the Dec. 2 terrorist attack in San Bernardino will be able to attend California state schools for free if a bill introduced by local legislators becomes law.

Senate Bill 893 would waive tuition and fees for any University of California, California State University or California Community College campus, if the victim and dependent were both California residents on Dec. 2.

“The terrorist attack in San Bernardino impacted all of us, throughout our region and the entire world,” said Assemblyman Marc Steinorth, R-Rancho Cucamonga, in announcing his co-authorship Wednesday. “We are all shaken, but the victims’ families had their lives changed forever. This legislation will, in a small way, ease some of the strain on these families, ensuring their children will be able to access a quality higher education.”

Similar benefits were provided to families of the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks and are also extended to families of peace officers who have died in the line of duty, according to the bill.

SB 893 is principally co-authored by Sen. Connie Leyva, D-Chino, and Assembly Members Steinorth, Cheryl Brown, D-San Bernardino, and Jay Obernolte, R-Hesperia, according to Victoria Stewart, Steinorth’s Capitol director.
