RANCHO CUCAMONGA — The animal shelter saw double its normal adoptions on Friday and Saturday as Assemblyman Marc Steinorth paid the full cost of any adoption.

That brought 23 dogs and cats to a permanent home, some after nearly a year in the shelter, and hopefully will continue to bring positive attention, said Steinorth, R-Rancho Cucamonga.

“Anybody who has formed that cherished bond knows it’s a relationship that can never be replaced,” he said. “I want to make sure that everyone can share that.”

Adopting a dog from the Rancho Cucamonga animal shelter normally costs $100, and cats are $50. Steinorth is covering that cost for the first 100 animals adopted Friday through Sunday.

That’s led to a huge surge in foot traffic and twice as many adopted animals as a typical weekend, said Veronica Fincher, director of the shelter.

“What’s great is we’re adopting out some of our animals who’ve been here for longer,” Fincher said, which is often more difficult to do. “If anyone might be interested, step in, or if you’re not ready yet, follow us on Facebook. We have a lot of great animals, and we’re really grateful to Assemblyman Steinorth.”

Steinorth, who was on the Rancho Cucamonga City Council before being elected to the Assembly, said he plans to contact shelters in Devore and San Bernardino to arrange similar events there.

He was also advocating for Assembly Bill 976, which he proposed, and which would give a tax deduction of up to $100 for fees paid to adopt an animal from a nonprofit or municipal shelter.

The free adoption event continues today from noon to 5 p.m.
