It was wonderful!” said Highland Relay For Life Chair Cindy Larson following the Saturday, May 16, event at Immanuel Baptist Church.

Sometimes gloomy skies did not put a damper on the celebration of those who observed another birthday with cancer, as well as remembrance of those who lost their lives.

There was no shortage of entertainment throughout the 12-hour event, with a professional DJ as well as performances by Lil Joe (Elvis tribute singer), Jazzercise, Kaizen Martial Arts, and Highland Music Company.

And there were special events like the “backwards lap, judging for the Best Patriotic Booth, the Cupid Shuffle, a scavenger hunt, sock hop and costume contest.

The event attracted 25 teams and raised about $40,000, with more coming in from the volleyball games and other contributors, said Larson.

“We especially want to thank Immanuel Baptist Church for providing the space,” Larson added.

Assemblyman Marc Steinorth addressed the crowd briefly during opening ceremonies, noting that, “Everyone of us has been touched by cancer.” He presented a proclamation to Larson, showing the Assembly’s recognition of the event.

Pastor Rob Zinn of Immanuel Baptist Church told about his own family’s experience with cancer as he gave the invocation.

Later, Pastor Bob Miner of Community Cross Church talked about his own 13-year battle with cancer.

Shelby Black, 19, described her experience with brain cancer, starting when she was in High School. In spite of that, she finished high school and started college, saying the experience ”changed me for the better,” and vowing to help others with their battle, challenging them to “never give up.”

Larson says the Relay For Life next year probably will be on the same date, and she would like to be involved, although she would be glad to turn over the chairmanship to another person.

The location is still undecided. Larson said a lot of people have said they like the Immanuel Baptist location and the 12-hour event instead of the 24-hour walk that has been done in the past.
