Sacramento, CA – Governor Jerry Brown signed AB 363 authored by Assemblyman Marc Steinorth (R-Rancho Cucamonga) to improve Election Day efficiency. The measure will allow officials to begin securely transporting ballots from a polling place to their counting location mid-day, rather than waiting until polls close. Doing so will reduce election-day costs and allow officials to release election results more quickly.

“California taxpayers expect their government to be as effective and efficient as possible,” said Steinorth. “I am very pleased that Governor Brown signed AB 363 into law, which will ultimately save our local governments money and minimize the likelihood of mistakes being made by tired and fatigued Election Day workers.”

AB 363 will be especially useful in large counties like San Bernardino, where it can take several hours to transport ballot containers to the central ballot counting location. Granting officials the flexibility to begin this process earlier in the day will allow counties to achieve significant cost savings, while still ensuring a secure and accountable process.

The legislation is sponsored by San Bernardino County and is supported by the California State Association of Counties, the California Association of Clerks and Election Officials, the Rural County Representatives of California, and the Urban Counties Caucus. The bill passed the Legislature with unanimous bipartisan support.

Assemblyman Steinorth represents the 40th Assembly District which includes Rancho Cucamonga, San Bernardino, Highland, Loma Linda, and Redlands.
