Inland Assemblyman Marc Steinorth, R-Rancho Cucamonga, has launched a drive to provide sporting goods for San Bernardino City Unified School District’s athletic programs.

The drive, titled “Stuff the Bus – Sports Edition,” will collect bats, balls, gloves and other sports gear for children to use.

“We want to empower families who can’t afford the equipment for students so that we can keep the kids in school and focus on healthy sports programs,” Steinorth, who attended schools within the district, said.

Sports programs play an equally important role in healthy childhood development as nutrition and high-quality education, Steinorth said in a phone interview.

The drive runs until June 12. Steinorth plans to close the effort with a special event at San Manuel Stadium in June that will see the gathered sports supplies stuffed onto school buses bound for San Bernardino area schools.

“We’re going to make a big show of how much our community partners are appreciated,” Steinorth said. “I’ve learned in life that when you ask people for help, and partners have stepped up to the plate, that they deserve to be thanked, and be shown appreciation.”

The Inland Empire 66ers, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Athletic Federation, Rotary Clubs of Highland and San Bernardino, Kiwanis Club of San Bernardino, Community Action Partnership of San Bernardino and Durham School Services have partnered with Steinorth to run the drive.

Steinorth and his partners have been spreading word about the event through traditional and social media.

A previous “Stuff the Bus” drive provided $13,000 worth of classroom materials to the San Bernardino City Unified School District.
